What is the difference between IT hardware and software?

The main difference between hardware and software is that hardware refers to the physical computing products you can touch. Software, on the other hand, is the applications which can be installed on the hardware - such as Microsoft Word, or an internet browser.

Another difference is hardware is developed using electronics whereas software is developed using programming. Therefore, if hardware is damaged it needs to be replaced with a new component but with software a backup copy can be installed.
